Solana Blockchain — Technology, Speed & Architecture
Solana is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain designed for global scalability without complex sharding or secondary layers. It was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko in 2017 and publicly launched in March 2020. The network is capable of processing over 65,000 transactions per second with sub-second finality.
Solana's core innovation is Proof of History (PoH) — a decentralized clock that creates a verifiable cryptographic record of time. By embedding timestamps directly into the blockchain, validators can process transactions in parallel without constant inter-node communication, dramatically increasing throughput while keeping fees below $0.01 per transaction.
The Solana ecosystem supports a vast range of applications: DeFi protocols including DEXs like Jupiter (Solana's flagship DeFi Superapp) and Raydium, NFT marketplaces, blockchain gaming, tokenized real-world assets, and payment infrastructure. In 2025, Galaxy Digital partnered with Superstate to tokenize its SEC-registered stock directly on Solana.
The Solana validator network uses Proof of Stake (PoS) combined with PoH for consensus. Token holders stake SOL with validators to secure the network and earn staking rewards. The staking yield is approximately 6–8% annually, and institutional products like Fidelity's FSOL Spot ETF now pass through staking yield to shareholders.
